Q Score Analysis

Clarity and Insight for the UK Charity Sector

Building a more transparent sector

We offer a groundbreaking approach to measuring financial effectiveness in the UK charitable sector. Built on the principle that charities, like other financial institutions, deserve rigorous, purpose-sensitive analysis, we provide a single, transparent measure of how well a charity is using its resources to deliver on its mission.

We apply robust financial analytics, tailored for the nonprofit world, to help charities, advisers, and stakeholders benchmark performance, manage risk, and plan with confidence.

We believe that transparency is the foundation for stronger, more resilient charities. Just as credit ratings transformed banking, Q Scores aim to transform how we understand and support charitable effectiveness.
With clear data and actionable insights, we empower the people driving social impact.

We currently offer two different products:

PIR Service

Using our Q score methodology to investigate the financial effectiveness of 2000 UK charities, we have produced detailed, downloadable reports which will be updated every 6 months with the latest figures submitted by each charity.
This gives a detailed and robust analysis of the charity’s performance over the last 6 months and its effectiveness in delivering its mission. [This needs re-writing to explain better what the PIR Service does, and how it is different from the PSP Service below]

PSP Service

The Q score methodology

Q Scores

Using data from the UK Charity Commission’s Part B table, we:

  • Analyse five years of financial statements from 2,000 of the UK’s largest charities
  • Index for inflation to ensure constant value comparability
  • Calculate 28 financial ratios across six key dimensions
  • Generate a single, weighted Q Score to capture overall effectiveness
  • Produce sector comparisons, variance analysis, and volatility rankings

This allows charities and their stakeholders to see clearly how they perform relative to peers—and where there’s room to grow.
