About us

QSA is a small analytics bureau focused on the UK charity sector.

It began when three financially minded friends—each involved in charities as trustees or volunteers—asked how charity performance could be measured. After early false starts, we realised that a charity’s philanthropic potential is shaped by its financial strength.

Viewing charities as financial entities clarified our aim: to assess how effectively they support their beneficiaries over time. From that, our analytical framework naturally followed.

Two challenges slowed progress: reliable data and processing power. The Charity Commission’s standardised Part B financial tables provided the first solution; advances in computing and AI provided the second. Together they made detailed, automated charity analysis practical and affordable.

Our principles haven’t changed—fair, open, transparent, useful analysis that helps trustees and executives manage finances more consistently. Comparing each charity’s results against Q Portfolio averages supports informed discussion on what to prioritise or maintain.

We’re grateful to the colleagues and friends in the sector who encouraged us through this long development. With their help, we’re proud to offer a practical, collective tool for improving charity financial management.

The publication of the first Q‑Score assessments marks a milestone, not an end. We’ll keep refining our methods as our clients’ experiences guide the next stage of our work.
